JUST HAVE A LOOK AT THESE MINING SITES.

ARE THE ENVIRONMENT AT RISK?
HAVE YOU VISITED A MINING SITE BEFORE?     THIS VIDEO GIVES AN IDEAL ABOUT HOW A MINING SECTOR IN GHANA OPERATES.
.

These video gives a clear and  very understandable
view about the various activities that takes place in most mining sectors.Degrading of the land includes, the cutting down of trees as well as using chemicals to blast river boundaries, to get access to the hidden treasure or minerals available.
All these activities causes harm to the environment.,leading to the land ,loosing its natural nutrients and raw materials. Most of the mining acquiring areas were "virgin" forest in its natural state, but are been destroyed, due to the activities carried out.
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A MINING SITE BEFORE? Whether your answer is positive  or  negative, you can experience one now,by clicking on the video button to have a view of  it.
Mining in general, involves a lot of activities in its operations.Sometimes, a dam is needed to be built for the process of the minerals that includes gold, diamond, bauxite and manganese.

THIS  VIDEO SHOWS A BUILT DAM  IN A MINING SECTOR USED IN CARRYING OUT THEIR DUTIES. ACCORDINGLY.

Miners in such places, as seen in the video do put in measures to ensure that, workers are well protected from  all kinds of dangers,by providing them with the necessary tools and equipments needed in performing their duties. On the other hand, illegal miners do not put in any measures to safeguard them from  taking risk. With the fact that the illegal miners are mostly unskillful, they also uses unprotected tools and equipments and as a result, serve as a threat to the nation.
Therefore, for the mining sectors to be successful, there is the need for them to make sure that, they perform their social responsibilities towards the various communities in which they operate,as a means of compensation to them,in return of the resources being taken from them. Provisions of facilities such as schools, hospitals, good roads, markets, electricity and others, will not only improve upon the developmental projects in the various mining communities, but the nation as a whole.

ILLEGAL MINING IN GHANA: DO MINING ACTIVITIES CAUSES MORE HARM TO THE ENVIR...: Well,lm very sure you may be confused about such issue, but don't be because, mining as known is seen as the legal way of extracting minerals...

DO MINING ACTIVITIES CAUSES MORE HARM TO THE ENVIRONMENT THAN ILLEGAL MINING?

Well,lm very sure you may be confused about such issue, but don't be because, mining as known
is seen as the legal way of extracting minerals which includes, gold, diamond, bauxite and even oil from the ground, either in rivers, around river banks and the environment as well.
Mining activities as seen in the above picture, causes a lot of harm to the environment as illegal mining does. This is because most  of the minerals are found in rivers and its environs, and as a result, the mining companies do blast the the river environs to get access to the targeted minerals, without caring about the effects and dangers it may  have on trees, birds, animals, and even individuals in the various mining communities.
Sometimes the release of toxic substances into the rivers, causes a lot of diseases to many people, especially those who fish from it.
Deforestation, also includes the damages mining causes to the environment. Its involves the clearing of the forest leading to cutting down of trees,to enable the miners accomplish their mission,of extracting minerals.
Therefore,it is no doubt that, mining activities indeed causes a lot of damages not only to the environment, but individuals as well.

At this point,do you agree to the fact that, both mining activities and illegal mininig causes harm to the environment?Have your say.

IS CITIZEN JOURNALISM A THREAT OR CHALLENGE TO PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM?

As a journalism student,i don't agree to the fact that, citizen journalism is a threat to professional journalism. This is because, a professional journalist undergoes training before carrying out his or duty, which includes gathering of information for any media organisation, while,Citizen journalist  do not.

Also, professional journalist have access to sources, facilities, and informations that citizen journalist generally do not. With this they normally bring out factual informations to the view of the public, without being bias,or taking sides. They report issues exactly as they are and as a results, are guided by various journalistic principles, that Citizen journalist have no idea of or knows nothing about.

I therefore see Citizen journalism as not a threat to professional journalism because, their existence is rather throwing a more challenge on the professionals to improve upon their skills and make use of  the available resources profitably, knowing well that, integrity is the key to good journalism.

DO YOU AGREE TO THAT?

WHY DO PEOPLE RISK THEIR LIVES IN ILLEGAL MINING

Many people, especially the youth do risk their lives in "GALLAMSEY" for many reasons.

Some of these  reasons are as a result of penury, that's ,
making it difficult to make ends meet.Others include, unemployment,
breaking homes, and lack of parental care and control and others
Lack of skills and the use of unprotective equipment results in
many people getting injured or in some cases been killed in such
 activities.

In an interview with some of the youth who are engaged
 in such activities,
they expressed their views as lack of job opportunities
 in their communities,
and the inability of the mining companies to perform their social
responsibilities accordingly, therefore, risking their lives in illegal
mining,is what they get their daily bread from.

With this,l dont see the reasons why "galamsey " should be a curse,
indeed,it is rather a blessing to some people in Ghana.
What do you think?

Do you have any idea about how illegal mining started in Ghana?
hmmm....is a long story, just keep reading and you will find out soon.

Well,Ghana happens to be the 10th leading producer of gold in the world, and the 2nd largest in Africa. However ,illegal mining popularly known as galamsey started very ,very long ago, before independence, when the capital of Ghana was known as Gold Coast.

During those days do you know how the name "Galamsey" was adopted as the meaning of illegal mining?  The colonial masters seeing how  Ghanaians gather the gold they get from their activities and sell them to others gave a name to those activities as "Gather them and sell".So through the Ghanaians pronounciation, instead of saying gather them and sell, they simply called it Galamsey..That's how the name "galamsey" came into the system as the meaning of illegal mining.

So,is illegal mining in Ghana, a blessing or a curse? Just give your views or comments about it,and watch out for the details soon.
