The colonial masters seeing how Ghanaians gather the gold they get from their activities and sell them to others gave a name to those activities as "Gather them and sell".So through the Ghanaians pronounciation, instead of saying gather them and sell,they simply called it Galamsey..That's how the name "galamsey" came into the system as the meaning of illegal mining.
